Primary Years Programme

Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Kinnaird Academy

At Kinnaird Academy, we believe that the early years of education lay the foundation for a lifetime of learning. That is why we have adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) — a globally recognized framework designed for children aged 3 to 12 years.

What is the PYP?

The PYP nurtures the whole child — academically, socially, emotionally, and ethically. Instead of relying on rote learning, students are encouraged to question, explore, and discover. They learn how to think critically, communicate confidently, and act responsibly in their community and the wider world.

Learning at Kinnaird Academy

Our PYP classrooms are vibrant, inquiry-driven spaces where:

  • Students take ownership of their learning by asking meaningful questions and exploring real-world issues.
  • Teachers act as facilitators, guiding inquiry and connecting learning across subject areas.
  • Parents and the community are partners in the learning journey, enriching the experience with authentic engagement.

Learning is framed around six transdisciplinary themes of global significance that help children connect their studies with the world around them. These themes encourage big ideas, conceptual understanding, and purposeful action.

The PYP Framework

The PYP at Kinnaird Academy emphasizes:

  • Knowledge – broad and balanced learning across disciplines
  • Concepts – big ideas that inspire deep understanding
  • Skills – thinking, communication, research, social, and self-management
  • Attitudes – respect, curiosity, empathy, integrity, and responsibility
  • Action – taking thoughtful and meaningful steps in response to learning

The PYP Exhibition

In the final year of the programme, our students present the PYP Exhibition — a collaborative inquiry project that allows them to demonstrate their learning, creativity, and capacity to take action. It is a proud moment that showcases their readiness for the next stage of education.

Our Commitment

As a PYP Candidate School, Kinnaird Academy is committed to:

  • Providing a student-centered education that values inquiry and creativity.
  • Building a strong learning community of teachers, students, and parents.
  • Preparing learners not just for academic success, but for life — as caring, responsible, and reflective individuals.

At Kinnaird, the Primary Years Programme is more than a curriculum; it is a vision of education that empowers children to thrive in an ever-changing world.
